INDOOR PAINTING PROJECTS

STENCILLED PICTURE FRAMES

Stenciling a frame is an excellent indoor painting project for beginners. It is easy to make and can be personalized for each room or as a gift for your favorite person.

Begin by purchasing a picture frame that has not been varnished or treated in any way. Pine is a good wood to use. A wooden frame with a flat, wide edge is easier to use and gives you added possibilities in your choice of designs. Lightly sand the frame with sandpaper to remove any roughness. Remove any dust with a tack cloth. A clean frame will insure the paint adheres properly with a smooth finish.

Choose your colors for the frame and the stencil for this indoor painting project. Using the color wheel helps make sure the colors will be in harmony for this indoor painting project. Choose colors that fit in with your décor and enhance the picture you select for your new frame.

Paint your frame with the base colors. Two coats may be necessary. Allow to dry completely.

Next choose your stencil. You can use a commercial stencil or make one yourself. The long stem of an ivy leaf is perfect for decorating tall, narrow areas. Different flowers or birds can be used for the corners and randomly placed around the frame. Fabric patterns that you have in your room can be inspirations. You can use the alphabet to personalize the frame. Anything from nature or see around you is a possibility. If you see a picture in a book you can photocopy the page and enlarge or reduce it to fit your frame. The choices are endless for this indoor painting project.

Plan the position of the stencil pattern using paper cutouts. Move the shapes around until you are happy with the design. Trace the designs for the pattern and transfer it to the card stock, acetate or stencil film. Use a craft knife to cut them out. If the acetate or stencil film tears the paint could leak out beyond the outline. Position the design over the frame and apply your accent color. Using a non permanent adhesive helps to hold the pattern in position. Flip the stencil to create a mirror image on the other side of the frame. When using two or more separate colors it may be necessary and easier to make a stencil for each color. Use a different brush for each color to keep the paint from mixing with the other color. Using a sponge is fast and creates texture. Just remember not to overload the sponge with paint. Overloading will allow the paint to seep under the stencil and create a thick uneven border.

Allow the paint to dry for at least 12 hours then apply two protective coats of varnish.

Using these simple steps you can create a beautiful indoor painting project or a beautiful gift that is uniquely yours with very little cost.
