Paint Clean Up and Removal Tips and Tricks

from:

Paint clean up and removal can be somewhat tricky, especially if you are new to the process. If you have a painted surface, you may not need to remove the paint, but can paint over the top. If you are hoping to get back to the natural tones of the wood, for example, striping down the paint is important. There are other instances when you should remove the paint as well. Here are some tips to help you with paint clean up and removal.

Old paint and varnish can usually be removed, even if they are older. There are several methods you can use to accomplish this. First, you can use a chemical paint or varnish remover. These are often found in most hardware stores and they can be one of the simplest of methods to use. This product is applied to the paint to "soften" it. The old paint can then be scrapped off using a putty knife. Use water to rinse the paint away. Allow the area to fully dry before repainting.

Another option is to sand away the paint. You can also use heat to remove the paint. These are options to consider if you cannot use the chemical product to remove the paint. The sand and heat methods are both more time consuming to use. This is why most projects are best handled with a chemical based product.

Paint Clean Up and Removal Tips

If you have uneven areas or you have hard to reach areas, it is best to use a chemical paint remover to remove the paint from the surface. Sanding in these areas may be impossible.

You may need to do some areas more than one time to get a finished, quality look. This is again especially important for those hard to reach places, such as the spindles of a chair.

If there is a carved out area, such as with woodworking or metal surfaces, use a scouring pad to get into those grooves. You can apply the chemical paint remover, allow it to sit for a few minutes then use the scouring pad to remove the paint thorough.

If you have rounded areas to remove paint from, and are struggling, place the rounded item into a can to catch the chemical remover as it drips down. This is a good option for surfaces like chair and table legs.

Protect areas where you do not want the paint or paint remover to get into, by placing paper towels in them. This is important in areas like key holes and cabinet locks.

Paint clean up and removal can be difficult, but if you do a good job here, you guarantee that the finished paint job will look fantastic.
