How Much Wallpaper Do You Need?
from:One of the biggest decisions you will need to make while shopping for wallpaper is how much to buy. It is important to note that you likely want to purchase all wallpaper for your project at one time, and ensure they are all from the same batch. This ensures that the same coloring is found on the entire project and that there are not different shades from one roll to the next. With that in mind, it becomes even more important to make sure you buy enough but not too much. How do you figure it all out?
Understanding wallpaper and wall coverings is not always that easy, especially when it comes to proper sizing. However, here are some tips that will help you through the process.
Get an accurate measurement of the room, including the height of ceilings, the amount of wall space you need and so on. For doors, you want to be sure you are counting the space above the door, but you can leave out the square footage of the door itself. The same is true for windows.
Next, look at the roll of wallpaper itself. There is usually a usable yield chart provided. Unfortunately, you will be unable to use all of the wallpaper mainly because patterns repeat and there will be some wallpaper that is lost due to the need to match up the patterns.
Divide the square footage of the room by the number of usable square footage from the rolls. This will provide you with a good estimation of how much rolls of wallpaper you will need. Keep in mind that you always want to round up, not down. It is likely you will have a need for at least that amount, sometimes more.
If you are unsure if you need 10 or 11 rolls, for example, find out if the facility you are buying from offers any type of warranty or money back if the unused, unopened rolls are brought back. Sometimes you will be unable to do this, but other times you can. It is best to over buy and never to under buy here since that may mean not getting wallpaper from the same batch. If you find that the store does not have enough, all of the wallpaper needed should be ordered together, to ensure the same batch is purchased throughout.
Wallpaper rolls are often sold in single or double rolls. Be sure you know how many square feet of usable footage is available on the roll before you invest. The better your measurements are, the better you will be at getting just enough wallpaper. Also, remember that you could make some errors along the way (not measuring right for each piece can be a big problem!)
