Are you trying to wallpaper over dark colored paint? That is often a problem since the paint may cause the discoloration of the wallpaper or it will been seen through the wallpaper. To fix this problem, apply a flat coat of white paint over the top of the wallpaper first. Allow this to fully dry and work as a primer to the walls. Do not use any type of glossy paint or oil based paint as that will make adherence a problem.
Some professional advocate the use of wallpaper lining, a thin paper that is applied to the wall before the wallpaper is added to it. It goes on much like wallpaper and it can give you some excellent practice for the job ahead. However, it is important to keep in mind that this can also help to keep the wallpaper looking good longer. It works to help keep the wallpaper from moving, creasing or stretching over its lifetime. This additional step can be quite helpful.
There are some situations where you may think about calling a professional to handle the wallpaper process. For example, if you are installing wallpaper on a large or very high wall, it may be best to allow a professional to handle this task. If the area is formal or you want a top result, either practice on another wall beforehand or hire a pro to do the work.
Still, most wallpaper projects can be done by the handy do it yourselfer. In fact, you may find that wallpaper can be a lot of fun to do, as it allows you to express a lot of creativity in the process.
