How to Clean Window Blinds

There are various ways to clean window blinds, with some methods being more trouble than others. The key is to spot clean them often so they don’t get the chance to build up a great deal of grease, dirt, or grime. It’s far easier to just dust off the blinds now and then than have to take them down and give them a thorough cleaning. Below, we’ll look at some of the ways in which you can clean your window blinds.

Cleaning Window Blinds that are Heavily Soiled

To clean heavily soiled window blinds, your best option is to just take them down from the window. You can then either take them outside and hose them down with the water hose or, depending on the size, immerse them in water in the bathtub. Either method will loosen the most stubborn dirt or grease and grime and allow you to wipe them down. You can usually just use a mild detergent, such as the kind you use to wash dishes. Hosing them off or soaking them in the tub will remove most of the stubborn dirt and then you can just wipe them down if needed. Then you can either hang them up to dry or dry them off yourself with a soft cloth.

Cleaning Blinds that are Somewhat Soiled

If your window blinds are more than dusty but are not heavily soiled, you can clean them without taking them down if you choose. You may just have to go over the soiled areas with a soft wet cloth and then vacuum the dust from the major areas of the blinds. If your blinds are exposed to cigarette smoke, you may have to clean them more often or you will notice a dull yellow film that covers the blinds.

Cleaning Dusty Blinds

If you just want to dust off your blinds, you can do this with a vacuum cleaner attachment, or you can buy one of those hand held tools in the grocery or discount store that are marketed for this purpose. If your blinds are not exposed to cigarette smoke or a lot of outside dirt or dust, then you should just be able to dust them off every now and then to keep them looking new. Turn the slats in order to get both sides clean when you are dusting or cleaning them so you will keep both sides looking like new.

Unless you’re just dusting off the blinds, you might want to take the opportunity to wash your windows as well, especially if you are removing the blinds. That way, both your windows and window blinds will shine and you won’t have to bother with the windows at all for a good while.
